The Mercury is a formidable Wall Mount Screw Hook that embodies force and finesse.  Generik’s original intent was to forge this one for Ladies’ Luxury Purses.  His goal:  NO STRAP DEFORMATION. Back in the day, you’d suspend your ‘Satchel’ from it – a traditional term for a bag with a strap for carrying school books.  These days, it’s for the ubiquitous Student Back Pack our kids lug to and from school.  It’s also a score for fine leather Purses and Briefcases, Bike Messenger Bags, and Luggage from Totes to Duffels to Carry On Baggage.   It accommodates a wide range of strap widths, securing your Pack without deformation to its strap.

Blacksmith Design Statement:

This Hook was developed to meet the need for hanging a filled bag or purse in such a way as to allow room for the bulk of the filled bag to not bang into or rub against the back wall. This is accomplished by a novel subtle upward sweep to the arm of the hook which tilts the bag away from the back wall mount. In addition, the Penny End scroll allows a secure rest when in use; not susceptible to a sly purse snatcher, yet allows easy one handed removal by person directly in front.

The unique Penny End is robust yet safely rounded to prevent bump injury or damage to fine leather or pet bump/snag injury. The round stock is smooth, having no sharp corners to start paint to chip or cut into bag straps or injure owner’s fingers.

Heavy duty and especially rigid at the unique elbow bends, this hook will easily bear over a 100# load and the size of hook arm will accommodate several straps, making this a one hook grab all. Finally, the gentle upward sweep of the holding arm portion of hook cradles without scrunching.

Each hook is hot hand forged by Generik the Blacksmith on an old Sheffield Cutler’s anvil with custom tooling. Each forging step utilizes unique hammers and anvil inserts specific to forging each size round stock, much different than typical Ironwork tooling. Hence the rarity of this smooth round stock and penny end form, uniquely suited to colorful surface treatment, while bringing safe ergonomics and durable finish. Easy to draw but much more involved to make, the Penny End is signature to this body of work and despite others’ clumsy attempts at replication with typical tooling, is not found elsewhere except on the very highest class of Ironwork. The goal has been to bring this high class form to otherwise common fixtures so the masses have access to Art.
