ORIGIN STORY:
On Etsy, this category of Hook launched us into territory we’d not yet considered and produced a big volume increase in sales. Customer Matt saw our Tiffany Cup Hook and asked us to turn the scroll inward by 180 degrees. Brilliant idea! We happily dubbed it The Matt Hook to honor our new friend who just so happened to be a Cheesehead gone West to California. He needed a handsome series of Hooks for an original lighting project he created for his living room. The Matt Hook gracefully secured the electrical cords in the corner of the room. Matt’s ‘wire pinners’ added just the right fine detail to his artistic installation. Thanks for the great idea Matt. We are eager to respond to custom requests. Often the best design ideas come straight from the customers. Try us! We’ll help you manifest your idea in iron.
It wasn’t long before customer Lisa came along desiring a larger Matt Hook. Generik responded by increasing the size of the mandrel from 3/4″ to 1-1/4″, around which the red hot iron is wrapped. Additionally, to ensure a secure mount, the Smith added a double punch attachment. Trendsetter Lisa dubbed the creation The Mona Lisa Hook and it’s been a stellar seller ever since.
The Martha soon followed as big sister to The Matt, forged on the 2″ mandrel with a wider opening and single screw attachment. Credits go to Donna for pushing us to the next size up, our new 3″ double punch edition.
Artist Blacksmith’s Design Statement:
All my ironwork features the hand wrought ‘Penny End Scroll’. Being the most attractive, least prone to snag and most durable scroll end, the Penny End requires much more attention to detail and many more steps to make than the typical rat tail snagg-able candy kiss type scroll end. The tooling is much different than the usual beat up Hammer, Anvil and Vise and the results of smoothly working round stock yield a more a durable finish with no corners to chip. A more naturalistic, softer and safer form. Most craft hand wrought iron work utilizes square stock and relies on the ‘rat tail’ scroll end. I did it that way for many years, like all the rest. This common easy method produces a quick and dirty hook where the thinnest, weakest section ends up right where the load is borne. If overloaded, the hook will straighten and drop the load. I have tested many items to destruction over many years so I am confident in my opinion and my hooks.
The rat tail scroll end is also prone to snagging hair and despite their visually weak effect can be dangerous to face, children and pets. A safety glasses fanatic, I always look first to eye protection and make my hooks with eye safety foremost in mind. The needle tapered rat tail scroll is cheaper to make usually taking but one ‘heat’ to completely forge, scroll and form. Ya get what ya pay for.
